Michelle and I had heard good things about Oklahoma City. Urban whitewater. Public art. Great food. All true (I'm now obsessed with the onion burger), btw. So, when we got an opportunity to go paddle, raft, and research for an article I am writing, we couldn't say "no." The wind was sweeping down the plains," as Hammerstein wrote, and after first deciding that Lake Hefner was too windy, we were second guessing our decision to head Lake Overholser. But once we got there and decided go head under the Route 66 bridge (yes, THAT Route 66) to the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, everything changed. We were protected from the wind, met some nice local paddlers, bathed in mud (lol), and saw an epic sunset. We capped it all off with a steak at Cattleman's, because when in OKC..
Part of the fun of paddling every state is finding a sticker for our boards, and I really love this one from Tree and Leaf, because it was friendly locals who made our paddle so awesome.
